Most college curriculums include courses on everything except how to be a great leader.  Why is it that we have to wait until we are 35, 40, 50 years old before we get the privilege of attending national conferences with renowned speakers telling us how to be great leaders.

Why is it that we have to be 15 years into our careers before the heavy hitters will even consider having lunch with us and it’s the heavy hitters that we learn from?  Why is it that there are all these great books written about leadership, teamwork, and change but we don’t read them until we are more than 35, 40 years old typically?  And guess what, unless you are the leader at a company, sometimes reading these books will only frustrate you because you don’t have the power to implement any of the things you just read even though a lot of what you just read is some of the most important principles ever put down on paper with regard to becoming successful professionally and personally.  THAT can be pretty frustrating.

That is the reason leadership development is so important, simply, because the world does not have enough great leaders.  But a lot of times it’s not because people aren’t capable of becoming great leaders, it’s because they don’t know how and they don’t know the importance of becoming a great leader.

I say don't wait.  Start learning to lead now.  Read good leadership books, attend seminars every chance you get, and always have the courage to stand up for what you believe in!
