One of the things
that you will probably not hear in business is this idea
that everything rises and falls on leadership. Some people believe
that leadership is only for a few – for the people at
the top of the corporate ladder, the elite. But when
people don’t learn to lead, they are passing up
wonderful opportunities.
Your
leadership skills determine the level of your success—and the success of those who work around you.
Ninety-nine percent of people want to do a good job.
How people perform is simply a reflection of the one for
whom they work.
For instance, if you
are a manager or a partner and your mantra is squeaky
will gets the oil and you are constantly reacting and
putting out fires rather
than being proactive; your staff is going to behave the
same way. The truth is, a lot of times we only work as
hard as the people above us.
Another way to put
this is if you are a 6 on a 10 scale, 8’s are not going
to hang around you. People naturally follow people
stronger than themselves. Some of you may be
wondering why you can’t keep a great staff. If you are
the leader and you are a 6, 8’s do not follows 6’s, 9’s
do not and certainly 10’s do not follow 6’s. A 3
will follow a 6 but there is only so much a 3 can give.
Another example of
the principle that everything rises and falls on
leadership is sports teams. If a team is not doing
consistently well, what happens? They fire all of the
coaches and get all new ones. That is, they get new
leaders. And that is because everything rises and falls
on leadership.
